  • I woke up one Saturday morning with some severe mouth problems... I had an awful canker sore, my wisdom teeth were hurting, and my gums were in severe pain and looked like they were beginning to decompose. Seriously: there were some green spots on there that did NOT look quite right. For a second one could have thought I had meth mouth (I'll get back to that in just bit). Now here's the thing about living in a small town: good luck finding a dentist that's open on a weekend. So for the next 48 hours I proceeded to rinse my mouth hourly, brush my teeth every few hours and go on an overdose of painkillers, to no avail: by the end of the weekend, my mouth looked just as bad, and I was still in severe pain, ready to start pulling my teeth out with pliers, then drive to the nearest Walmart (there's three of them in town!... but that's another story) and go on a shooting rampage. My boyfriend was supposed to visit in a few days, and we had some serious making out on the agenda, which would not happen in these conditions (did I mention the serious halitosis?): I had to take action. Monday morning, first thing right out bed, I go online and find the first dentist that will take my insurance: Baytowne Dental Center. Amazingly enough, they ask me to come in the next twenty minutes. Forget about taking a shower: I brush my teeth, jump into my car and I'm on my way. My first experience there was quite positive, if a bit traumatizing: the dentist, Dr. Hick, looked at my mouth for just a few seconds and knew what it was. ANUG. You know it's semi serious when your dentist starts taking digital photos of your mouth... I'll let you look it up, but beware of the photos you might come across as you google it (stay away from Google images!!). Some rare form of gingivitis that's the most common symptom of meth mouth (here we go!... seriously, I swear, I never did meth, never will, and just in case I needed another reason not to try it, this should do it), and that used to be common among the soldiers in the trenches during World War I. Now how on earth did I catch that sh*t, I wish I knew. Twenty minutes later, I leave the office with a prescription for antibiotics and some weird mouth rinse which is supposed to make my tongue black (awesome... but who cares, I'd have done anything at that point). Now thank Jesus for antibiotics. A few days and still quite a bit of pain later, my mouth finally starts feeling and looking normal again. I go back to see Dr. Hick, she gives my teeth a good cleaning, and everything is in order. Phew... I wouldn't miss on any making out. Since then, I've decided to take better care of my teeth. I've gone back once, and Dr. Hick designed this ridiculous treatment plan which starts with pulling my wisdom teeth out (... not looking forward to this one...), root planing, cancer screening, and an obscene number of crowns which I won't divulge here... for the very affordable amount of 10 thousand dollars. What?! Yes, 10 thousand dollars. I wish that were a joke. There goes my down-payment for my dream vacation house in Puerto Rico. Oh well.
