| - I had been going to West Valley Women's Care for years. They oversaw my prenatal care when I was pregnant with my second child 7 years ago, but unfortunately it seems like they've gone through changes since then, and my experience this time around was not a positive one.
I think as far as annual exams, this place is okay. However, I absolutely do not recommend going here for prenatal care, especially if you have or may have a high-risk pregnancy.
I'm 30 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby and unfortunately, the lack of care I had been receiving during the course of this pregnancy recently prompted me to switch to another practice altogether.
First, let me start by saying that the prenatal appointments here feel very rushed. I often felt more like a number than an actual patient. The doctors really did just the bare minimum and I didn't feel like they were very thorough with their questions, getting to know my medical history or understanding my concerns. They didn't once bring up my history of pre-term labor, which I thought was odd because typically that means subsequent pregnancies are considered a higher risk, from what I understand.
Whenever I had an ailment or concern about something that was bothering me, they gave me a few suggestions and said if it got any worse they would have to refer me to a specialist. I feel like they were always trying to refer me to specialists for every little thing.
Perhaps one of my biggest frustrations was that I tried multiple times to get them to approve me for intermittent FMLA so that my job would be protected if I wasn't feeling well and missed a day of work here and there, but they refused to fill it out. Even after I found out at 29 weeks that I have gestational diabetes (and knowing I have a history of pre-term labor), they refused, which I thought was ridiculous. I've never heard of anyone having such a problem with getting approved for FMLA during a pregnancy! I was floored.
Another issue I experienced was that they do not perform ultrasounds in-office. They refer you to Arizona Perinatal Care Centers to have them done. They also don't manage gestational diabetes in their office either, as they referred me to a specialist for that as well. Keep in mind, this was all in addition to having to still go to regular appointments at their office, which meant that I had to take extra time off work to see the specialists.
Overall, I was very disappointed and let down with the level of care I received. I did not feel that the doctors truly cared about my health and well-being. They did not seem to care how I was feeling, and certainly didn't care if my job would be in jeopardy if I missed work because I wasn't feeling well or needed to go to appointments more regularly.
I recently switched to another OB a bit closer to my work, and even at my first appointment he was very thorough. He asked me a lot of questions, gave me an ultrasound in the office and wrote the prescriptions for the items I needed to monitor my blood sugar. When they said I needed to go to weekly appointments due to my gestational diabetes, they didn't give me any trouble when I asked if they could fill out FMLA paperwork for me - they didn't even have a problem with throwing in a few extra days for when I'm not feeling well.
Once again, I'm very disappointed with WVWC and won't be going back.

Update on 12/01/17:
I wanted to leave an update because my daughter was born two weeks ago. She had to be delivered at 37 weeks because I was experiencing so many issues with my pregnancy, and it turned out that on top of gestational diabetes, I had gestational hypertension. I had a miserable third pregnancy and once again, I felt that WVWC didn't take my concerns seriously. After my daughter was born via c-section, my new doctor told me that my uterus was so thin, if we would've waited to deliver her, it could have ruptured. I honestly feel like if I hadn't made the switch to a better OB, my daughter could have died. I was even able to get on short-term disability with the help of my new doctor, whereas WVWC would not even agree to give me a few days off per month via FMLA for when I wasn't feeling well. I was told they like to keep women working as long as possible. So in other words, they like to keep their patients uncomfortable and suffering as long as possible, and put their jobs in jeopardy just so they can avoid filling out paperwork. I'm so thankful I made the switch to a more experienced doctor that I trust. Ladies, always listen to your gut and don't settle. If you feel you're not receiving quality care, find a doctor who will provide you with the care you deserve.
