  • I took my dog to the VEC after she had bouts of vomiting. The vomiting started almost immediately after the chewed the fur off her tail, as there were burrs stuck in there (and I wasn't around). I had heard positive things about the VEC. However I had the total opposite experience when I took my dog there. I saw Dr. Randi Stead. I explained how she had gotten into burrs and ripped the fur off her tail and I had not seen any fur in her vomit or poops. Even with all this background information, she said the vomiting could be due to various things like cancer and liver failure. She came back with an estimate of over $1,100 with tests varying from an ultrasound (even though she stated that you might not see the fur through the ultrasound) Addison's disease. After doing 4 x-rays she came back and suggested they keep Lucy in the hospital that night and hook her to an IV. I said 'oh is she dehydrated'? She replied 'no just to keep her fluids going'. I was by myself when I went there and felt very vulnerable (I'm now thinking my dog may have cancer). I felt the tests she was suggesting were unnecessary and a cash grab. I didn't find her very sympathetic or compassionate either. Even the reception staff were rude. I could hear them bashing people who called in with questions about their animals. Based on this experience I will not return to the VEC (unless it's through a referral to one of the specialised vets there) Since then, I've talked to more people who have better experiences at Central Toronto Veterinary Referral Clinic.
