  • I generally like this place, but we had an inexcusable experience yesterday. A group of ten of us went for $1 Happy Hour Oysters. All told, our group ordered 12 dozen, but at the end of the evening, we were charged for 16 dozen. That's nearly $50 worth of oysters we didn't eat. The restaurant was hosting a private wedding reception on the newer half, so the place was very crowded and chaotic. Our waitress was visibly stressed out from the moment we walked in. She was visibly shaking the entire evening. Each of us ordered our oysters at the counter separately, but she decided to maintain one "record" on a couple of post-it notes. It was a struggle to even get the oysters we ordered because she was very confused. As we each paid, we tipped her geneously because we could tell she was having a hard time. Yet, after each of us paid, she insisted we still owed for four dozen. Those of us that had gotten oysters approached the counter to clear up the misunderstanding. She explained that she wrote down how many dozen we ordered as we ordered them, then crossed them off as we paid for them. Each of us recounted how many we had ordered and how many we had paid for, and some of us provided receipts to show we had paid. This wasn't sufficient for our waitress, as she insisted she was right. It was insulting. The items she crossed off were illegible so there was no way to evidence where she had made a mistake. We ended up having to pay for the oysters we didn't eat. She made comments like, "We've been doing this for 10 years." That's swell, but your record system is archaic at best, and you are a mess right now. She complained that she didn't want "to break the check up" in the first place. The check shouldn't have needed broken up because we ordered separately. She should have given each person a separate post-it with their name on it. She overcomplicated the bill and then held us responsible for it. It was infuriating. All in all, we won't? be returning. Ever. It was my favorite spot for Happy Hour Oysters but I will find a new one. I've rarely been so insulted while dining out, especially by someone who refuses to accept they made a mistake when their only evidence is that they didn't scratch out something on a post-it note. We are ten honest professionals trying to have a nice night out. This was a disaster, and Penn Avenue Fish Company was responsible.
