  • I have a very long history with Tung Hing. And this just might be the best Chinese bakery in the city. For the better part of the last thirty years, my mother has made the pilgrimage once a year to get the Jack Fruit (now called "Mixed Fruit") cake for my birthday. Ever since I was a kid, I've come to anticipate and savor that light mix of melon, cantaloupe and fruit on some of the best icing I've ever consumed. I basically make this a request once a year, because I can't go without my yearly fill of it. My recent visit to the Mississauga Chinese Centre reminded me that I needed to visit here, and I wasn't disappointed with the experience. It's a time capsule from 20 years ago, warts and all. Sure, the place isn't all that clean and the service is what you'd expect, but the selection is unmatched. Pork/chicken/hot dog/coconut buns for days, that damn cake (I was THIS close to buying one for myself and scarfing it down), little oddities like sticky rice in bamboo leaves, build-your-own pastry boxes... it's about as close to Chinatown as you can get without actually being in Toronto. In the end, I came out with an armful of pork buns and lots of nostalgic memories. I'm not being facetious when I say that if you love Chinese food, you need to make this bakery a destination. It is well worth the trip. Highly recommended.
