For years I've chosen Home Depot because they were closer and a little better organized than Lowes. But I recently had to make a return on the same day I bought something (bought the wrong item) and they demanded my driver's license because I had used a gift card for a portion of the order (not the whole thing). This is despite the fact that I had the receipt. This is a really poor policy that the managers can't override, and the worst part is that they told me the information is given to a third party to track returns. Nobody has been able to tell me the name of this company or their privacy policy.
It's a big problem to me so I'll be shopping at Lowes from now on, and avoiding gift cards since they aren't treated like cash is. A cash or credit card return with a receipt wouldn't have required an ID, I asked.
