  • A bit of history: I grew up a couple of blocks away from Klein's, and the land they are on once belonged to my family. They've been in business on this corner forever. My first boyfriend even had a part-time job here. We go way back. I only started visiting them for gardening supplies a few years ago, though, because I thought they mainly did delivery flowers and houseplants and such. Not true! You can find everything you need for anything garden related here, for indoors or out. They recently razed their historic homestead house and greenhouse and built a shiny new facility in its place with soaring ceilings and tons of natural light. My daughter and I checked it out on Mother's Day. Oops! So did everyone else, and their mother. Yikes, what a madhouse. But the new space is absolutely beautiful, and *bonus!* you don't have to duck your head to avoid the dripping pipes as you make your way down the narrow aisles anymore. We made our selections and trundled our cart to the check-out area, which is a cavernous space, but only had two cashiers (and two cash registers) for all those people. The lines were at least 20-carts-deep. We waited for a long while, but then we gave up and abandoned ship. In fairness, that was probably one of their busiest days of the year, but they were not prepared for it. We visited several other garden centers that day, but ultimately returned to Klein's about a half hour before closing, because we hadn't found the prices or items we liked elsewhere. Surprisingly, our cart remained exactly where we had (rudely) left it several hours earlier. No one had unpacked it or put it away. Which was great, because we just picked up where we had left off, made our purchases with ease after the crowds had subsided, and left, happy little garden campers. Notes/suggestions: increase staffing, and get *at least* one more cash register up and running, if only for weekends or major garden-centric shopping days; get *lots* more product to fill the unused spaces; rethink the 'in' and 'out' doors and signage, because it's very counterintuitive and confusing as it is currently; and please put that historic farm truck in a more prominent location, it adds SO much charm! We had to go looking for it, and found it tucked back by some offices. Bugs (figurative, not actual) always have to be worked out in a new space, so no worries, we'll be back. Many, many times, I'm sure.
